DHAKA, Bangladesh — Ireland’s off-spinner Andy McBrine delivered a devastating opening spell on Day 1 of the 2nd Test, claiming all three wickets to leave Bangladesh struggling at 100 for 3 at the lunch break. Bangladesh, leading the two-match series 1-0, chose to bat after captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

McBrine’s Triple Strike Halts Hosts
Bangladesh’s innings began solidly. Openers Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam added 52 runs for the first wicket. However, the introduction of spin brought an immediate collapse orchestrated by McBrine, who finished the session with figures of 3/34.
The wickets fell in quick succession:
Shadman Islam (35) was the first to go, trapped leg-before by a sharply turning delivery.
Next, Mahmudul Hasan Joy (34), fresh off a century in the first Test, fell, giving his wicket away under pressure.
Finally, Najmul Hossain Shanto (8) attempted to counter-attack with a six. However, a brilliant turning ball from McBrine crashed into his stumps, dismissing the captain immediately.
Mushfiqur Celebrates Milestone
The fall of Shanto brought veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim to the crease for his 100th career Test, becoming the first Bangladeshi cricketer to reach the landmark. Therefore, the current task for Mushfiqur (batting on 3) and Mominul Haque (batting on 17) is crucial. They managed to safely navigate the remaining minutes of the session, preventing further damage.
The onus now falls on this experienced pair to rebuild the innings in the afternoon session and ensure the host nation capitalizes on the pitch’s favorable conditions.
