Alongside the 13th National Parliamentary Election scheduled for February 12, 2026, the Interim Government of Bangladesh is set to hold a historic nationwide referendum. Under the slogan “The Key to the Country is in Your Hands,” the Chief Adviser’s Office has launched an extensive awareness campaign to inform citizens about the proposed constitutional reforms.
On Friday (January 2), the official Facebook page of the Chief Adviser released a detailed leaflet titled “Referendum 2026: Parliamentary Election – The Key is in Your Hands.” The document outlines 11 transformative reforms that will be implemented if the ‘Yes’ vote prevails.
The 11 Proposed Reforms Include:
Caretaker Government & EC: Joint collaboration between the government and opposition in forming these institutions.
Constitutional Safeguards: Preventing any single party from unilaterally amending the Constitution.
Permanent Referendum Clause: Mandatory public voting for significant constitutional changes.
Empowering Opposition: Appointing Deputy Speakers and Committee Chairs from the opposition.
Term Limits: No individual can serve as Prime Minister for more than 10 years.
Women’s Representation: Gradually increasing seats and participation for women in Parliament.
Upper House of Parliament: Establishing an Upper House to ensure a balance of power.
Judicial Independence: Ensuring the judiciary operates entirely without political interference.
Fundamental Rights: Adding permanent access to the internet as a basic fundamental right.
Presidential Pardons: Restricting the President’s power to arbitrarily pardon convicted criminals.
Power Balance: Ensuring a balanced distribution of power between the President and the Prime Minister.
