Eden Gardens, Kolkata: South Africa secured their first Test victory on Indian soil since 2010, stunning the hosts by 30 runs in a dramatic, low-scoring thriller that concluded inside three days. The Proteas, who won the World Test Championship last summer, pulled off a remarkable comeback after trailing by 30 runs on the first innings, successfully defending a modest target of 124 as India capitulated for just 93 in 35 overs.

The victory was largely credited to veteran off-spinner Simon Harmer, 36, who dominated the match with identical figures of four wickets in each innings, culminating in exceptional match figures of 8-51. Harmer ripped through the middle order alongside fellow spinner Keshav Maharaj (2-37), triggering a final collapse that saw India lose their last five wickets within eight overs.
India’s chase was further complicated as they were a batter short; captain Shubman Gill was ruled out of further participation in the match after suffering a neck injury and retiring hurt on day two. Gill remains in hospital for observation. The hosts’ innings began disastrously when left-arm seamer Marco Jansen quickly removed both openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, leaving India reeling at 1-2. Although Washington Sundar offered a brief period of resistance with 31 runs from 92 balls, he eventually fell to the part-time spin of Aiden Markram.
Crucial to South Africa’s turnaround was the defiant batting of captain Temba Bavuma. Starting Day Three at 93-7, with a lead of only 63, Bavuma anchored the innings, remaining unbeaten on 55 runs from 136 balls. He was the only batter in the entire match to pass 40. Aided by some powerful hitting from Corbin Bosch (25), Bavuma skillfully guided the tail to set India the tricky 124-run target.
The series now moves to Guwahati, where the second and final Test is scheduled to begin next Saturday, November 22.
