South Africa Cruise Past Ireland to Win First ODI Encounter

South Africa beat Ireland by seven wickets on Saturday. This win came in East London. Thus, it gives them a 1-0 lead in the three-game ODI series.

A wet patch caused a 90-minute delay. Therefore, this reduced each side’s innings to 47 overs. Ireland chose to bat after winning the toss.

Ireland made 209-7. Opener Sarah Forbes scored a steady 42 off 71 balls. Crucially, Sune Luus dismissed Forbes with an LBW.

Luus had a major impact. Later, she top-scored for the hosts with an unbeaten 66. South Africa reached Ireland’s total in the 37th over.

The Irish top order’s start was steady. However, late scores lifted the pace. Laura Delany hit a quick 21 off 18 balls. Additionally, Rebecca Stokell added 39 not out off 48 balls.

The Proteas chased easily. They won by seven wickets with 10 overs spare. Although Cara Murray took two wickets for Ireland, it was not enough.

The teams will play again on Tuesday in Gqeberha. Finally, the last match is Friday in Johannesburg. Ireland previously lost the T20 series 2-0.
