Bhairab District Status: Shariful Alam Revives 'Old Bait' and Attacks Former Leaders

BHAIRAB (Kishoreganj): National elections always bring the same old issue to the forefront for the people of Bhairab: the long-discussed promise of achieving ‘district status.’ This election cycle, BNP leader Md. Shariful Alam is following the same path for the Kishoreganj-6 (Bhairab-Kuliarchar) constituency.

He once again presented Bhairab residents with the dream of a new district. Local conscious citizens view this move as a “political stunt” or “electoral bait.”

Attack on Deceased Leaders
Shariful Alam recently gave a speech at a rally. He harshly criticized deceased and former public representatives of Bhairab.

He stated that past leaders failed to secure district status for Bhairab. They included former Presidents and LGRD Ministers. “They used their power but only took votes,” he claimed.

Political analysts call this attack inappropriate. Shariful Alam did not directly name the late President Zillur Rahman or former Ministers. However, his “venom” was clearly directed at them. This behavior is seen as a breach of political decorum.

Promises vs. Reality Check
The public is questioning his ability to deliver. Shariful Alam himself admitted his power would not match that of a President if elected. Yet, he is making the same promises the Presidents failed to keep.

Besides promising a district, he also vowed to establish a ‘Special Economic Zone’ and provide easy loans.

However, local voters believe administrative complexities have long halted the Bhairab District issue. Shariful Alam is ignoring this reality. He is instead trying to win sympathy with emotional speeches.

Public Skepticism over Commitment
In his speech, he said, “If God grants me power, I will try to convince my government to make it a district.”

Many feel disappointment over his use of the words ‘if’ and ‘try to convince.’ They see his statement as just another empty promise. This promise, they believe, will be forgotten immediately after he gains power.
