DHAKA – The Bangladesh Police Service Association (BPSA) has protested loudly. They condemned comments by Jamaat-e-Islami leader Shahjahan Chowdhury. He publicly told party workers to bring the administration and police under their “control.”

The BPSA represents high-ranking police officers. It called the remarks “ambitious and demeaning.” The Association argues that police now work only by law, not by political loyalty.

The Controversial Order
Shahjahan Chowdhury is a central executive committee member of Jamaat. He is also a former Member of Parliament. He made the comments at a rally in Chattogram last Saturday. His instructions quickly spread on social media, causing major criticism.

The Jamaat leader had stated:

“In every area, the administration must be brought under our control. They will act on our orders—arrest, file cases… The police must walk behind you.”

Police Response: ‘Political Era is Over’
In a statement Monday night, the BPSA hit back hard. First, it called the comments an “incitement.” It said the goal was to exploit a core state institution politically.

Furthermore, the Association stressed a change in the force. Therefore, it declared:

“The era of fulfilling political ambitions is over. Now the police work prioritising law, regulations, and public welfare.”

Additionally, the BPSA noted the police are now working in a “more neutral and professional manner.” This shift began after the 5 August student–citizen uprising.

Meanwhile, the BPSA confirmed that the police will perform their duties impartially before the upcoming election. They will not favor any political party.

Jamaat’s Reaction
Following the strong public backlash and the BPSA’s condemnation, the Jamaat-e-Islami central leadership took action. However, they tried to distance the party from Shahjahan Chowdhury’s statement.

A party official stated that the remarks were the former MP’s personal opinion. He said the comments were “completely contrary” to the party’s official policy. The party confirmed it has asked Shahjahan Chowdhury for an explanation.
