A court has sentenced the deposed Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, to death in a case of crimes against humanity for her alleged responsibility in the genocide committed during the July Mass Uprising. She received the death penalty for the killing of six individuals in Chankharpool.

The verdict was announced on Monday (November 17) at 2:50 PM by the three-member judicial panel of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1), led by Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder.

The other members of the Tribunal were Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

During the verdict announcement, the crowded courtroom included lawyers as well as several family members of those killed in the July-August incidents.

In the verdict, the court stated that three charges against Sheikh Hasina have been proven. She was given imprisonment until death for one charge and the death penalty for the other two offences.

It is worth noting that, during the case hearing, the prosecution repeatedly alleged that Sheikh Hasina was the mastermind, meaning the planner, abettor, and Superior Commander of all types of crimes against humanity committed during the July Mass Uprising.

Apart from Sheikh Hasina, the other two defendants in this case are former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun.
