Why do we suddenly feel like we are ‘falling’ while sleeping?

A sudden feeling of falling, often followed by a jerk, is known medically as a 'Hypnic Jerk.' This common phenomenon occurs as the body transitions from wakefulness to sleep.

Almost everyone experiences this phenomenon at some point in their lives: just as they start to fall asleep, they suddenly feel as if they are falling from a high place. This is immediately followed by an abrupt jerk or twitch in the body, and they wake up. Medical science identifies this event as a “Hypnic Jerk” or “Sleep Start.”

According to experts, this is a completely normal occurrence and part of the sleeping process. When we drift into a drowsy state toward deep sleep, our muscles relax rapidly. The brain sometimes misinterprets this rapid relaxation as a sign that the body is genuinely falling. It then triggers a quick muscle contraction, which we feel as a jerk.

Some researchers suggest that the hypnic jerk is an evolutionary reflex dating back to the time of our ancient ancestors. Since humans used to sleep in trees, the brain would test whether the body was secure.

Frequency and Causes

Statistics show that approximately 70% of people experience this hypnic jerk. However, certain factors can increase the likelihood of these jerks:

  • Anxiety or Mental Stress

  • Consuming excessive coffee or other stimulants before sleeping

  • Irregular sleep schedules

  • Performing heavy exercise right before bed

Experts assure that the hypnic jerk is not a serious problem. It is generally harmless and normal. However, if it happens every night or significantly disrupts sleep, one should seek professional advice.

Tips to Reduce Hypnic Jerks

Experts suggest a few ways to lessen hypnic jerks:

  • Avoid caffeine-containing beverages in the evening to ensure better sleep.

  • Go to sleep at the same time every day.

  • Avoid using mobile phones or TV for at least one hour before sleeping.
