HOLLYWOOD, November 19, 2025 – Guillermo del Toro’s $120 million film of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has arrived. Oscar Isaac stars as Victor Frankenstein. Jacob Elordi plays the Creature. Significantly, the film is not horror. It is a deep Gothic drama about trauma and the cost of being alone.

The film premiered at the Venice Festival. Following that, it launched on Netflix on November 7. Critics praise its stunning look. Moreover, they note the film’s compassionate approach to the classic story.

Neglect Makes the Monster

Del Toro shifts the story’s focus. Instead of focusing on the creation, he highlights rejection. The film argues that cruelty makes the monster.

  • Victor’s Pain: Victor Frankenstein is brilliant but also deeply flawed. He is haunted by past abuse. Consequently, his cruelty toward the Creature copies the neglect he once faced. This starts a painful cycle.

  • The Creature’s Search: Jacob Elordi brings raw emotion to the Creature. He starts as an innocent soul. However, society and his creator shun him. Therefore, he acts out of pain and a desire for acceptance. Ultimately, the film shows that loneliness is the worst consequence.

Style and Success

The film looks incredible. Del Toro’s style blends beauty and darkness. The large budget shows in the detailed sets.

The film quickly became a hit. It jumped straight to the number-one movie worldwide on Netflix. In addition, critics gave it a “Certified Fresh” rating. Elordi’s performance earned massive praise. Many call it the most emotionally complex Creature in film history.

Del Toro believes the film is his “song.” He says it reminds viewers that forgiveness and understanding lead to true humanity.
