Narayanganj, Bangladesh — BNP-nominated candidate Mohammad Masuduzzaman has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming election for the Narayanganj-5 (City-Port) constituency, citing heightened security concerns and family distress. The businessman and sports organizer made the solemn announcement today, Tuesday afternoon, during a discussion with journalists and local party leaders at the Narayanganj Press Club.

Masuduzzaman, who is the Managing Director of Model Group and a former president of the Narayanganj Chamber of Commerce and Industries, stated that the decision was personal and made after careful consideration of the prevailing environment.
The Decision: Family Safety is Paramount
Expressing profound gratitude to the voters who had shown him strong support during his initial campaign, Masuduzzaman emphasized that his family’s safety came first.
“Due to the recent security situation and personal reasons, I will not contest the election, nor will I purchase the nomination. I apologise to the residents of the city and port,” he stated. “Family and security come first… In light of recent events and circumstances, my family is deeply distressed and fearful. There are additional security concerns which I prefer not to elaborate on. The overall environment is negative. This decision is mine, not the party’s.”
He acknowledged that his withdrawal would disappoint many party members and well-wishers, saying, “I know the decision I am making… the hopes and expectations of many within my party and well-wishers have been dashed.”
Campaign and Future Outlook
Masuduzzaman had been actively campaigning, conducting public outreach, and holding meetings since the BNP central office announced his nomination on November 23rd for the constituency, which covers wards 11 to 27 of Narayanganj City Corporation and the Bandar Upazila.
He thanked BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, for the honor bestowed upon him, stating, “He honored me, and I could not live up to that. I hope the party will consider this matter. I cannot compromise my family’s safety, and family is paramount.”
Regarding the future of the party in the constituency, Masuduzzaman called for unity, stressing, “Whoever receives the nomination for this constituency, we will work with our leaders and members for the party. There will be no hostility among us; we will all work together.”
The withdrawal reshapes the political landscape in this high-profile area, previously represented by Jatiya Party’s Selim Osman, who stepped back from active politics following the fall of the Awami League government last August. Masuduzzaman, who only formally joined the BNP on September 9th, had entered the race alongside other BNP aspirants, including former MP Abul Kalam and city BNP convener Sakhawat Hossain.
