A Dhaka court on Sunday (December 21, 2025) granted bail to Abdul Hannan, who was arrested by mistake in connection with the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, the spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat passed the order after a hearing confirmed that Hannan’s motorcycle was not the one used in the assassination.
Case Background: Sharif Osman Hadi was shot on December 12 in Bijoynagar and tragically passed away on December 18 in Singapore. Following the attack, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) detained Hannan from Mohammadpur on December 13, suspecting him based on a registration number that was nearly identical to the one on the assailants’ bike.
The Mistake Explained: During his three-day remand, it was revealed that while the assailants used a Honda Hornet with a fake plate, Hannan owns a Suzuki Gixxer. The registration number used by the killers ended with the digit ‘6’, but it was misidentified as ‘5’, which belonged to Hannan’s bike. Hannan had repeatedly told the court and investigators that he had already sold his motorcycle to a showroom and was innocent.
The investigation officer’s report submitted to the court on December 17 confirmed that Abdul Hannan was not involved and was a victim of a numerical error in the registration plate identification.
