The offices of Bangladesh’s two most prominent newspapers, Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, were targeted in a series of attacks and vandalism yesterday. The incidents have sparked widespread concern over the safety of journalists and the state of press freedom in the country.

The Incident
Witnesses reported that groups of protesters gathered in front of the media houses, chanting slogans before the situation escalated. At the Prothom Alo office, individuals forced their way into the premises, damaging furniture, glass doors, and office equipment. Similar scenes were reported at The Daily Star headquarters, where the building’s entrance and signage were targeted.
Security personnel at both locations were reportedly outnumbered during the initial surge. While no major injuries to staff have been confirmed, the psychological impact on the newsrooms has been significant.
Context of the Attacks
These attacks follow a period of heightened tension and targeted campaigns against these specific media outlets. Various groups have recently accused the newspapers of biased reporting, leading to organized protests that eventually turned violent.
Reaction from the Media Community
The Editors’ Council (Sampadak Parishad) and various journalist unions have condemned the violence in the strongest terms. In a joint statement, media leaders called the attacks “a direct assault on the freedom of the press” and urged the interim government to ensure the security of all media professionals.
“Dissent and criticism are part of a democracy, but violence against a newsroom is an attempt to silence the voice of the nation,” said a representative from a leading journalists’ association.
Government Response
Law enforcement agencies arrived at the scenes later to disperse the crowds and have since increased patrolling around major media hubs. Authorities have promised a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrators and have stated that no one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands.
