Iran Seizes Fuel Tanker with Bangladeshi, Indian Crew Carrying 6 Million Liters of Smuggled Diesel

Iranian authorities have seized a foreign tanker in the Gulf of Oman carrying a massive shipment of smuggled fuel, Iranian state media reported on Saturday (December 13), citing the judiciary of Hormozgan province.

The tanker was reportedly carrying six million liters of “smuggled diesel.” Iranian officials confirmed that the vessel’s 18 crew members include individuals from Bangladesh, as well as India and Sri Lanka, though the exact nationality breakdown was not specified. The captain of the tanker is among those detained as part of the ongoing investigation.

Alleged Violations
The judiciary claims the tanker violated several regulations, including:

Disobeying orders to stop.

Attempting to flee.

Lacking necessary documents related to navigation and cargo.

Shutting down all navigation systems, according to Iranian officials.

The seizure operation took place near the coast of the Gulf of Oman, according to an official from Hormozgan province quoted by the semi-official Fars news agency.

The Problem of Fuel Smuggling
Iran is currently battling extensive fuel smuggling operations. Due to heavy government subsidies and the devaluation of its national currency, fuel prices in Iran are among the lowest in the world. This massive price disparity drives smuggling both overland to neighboring countries and by sea to Gulf Arab states.

Iranian forces regularly seize such vessels, typically claiming they are being used for the illegal transport of fuel in the Gulf.
