Narsingdi Correspondent: A young man named Mamun Mia (25) was killed in a bloody clash between two groups over establishing dominance in Raipura, Narsingdi. At least 10 people, including those with bullet injuries, were wounded in the incident. The violence took place on Monday (December 8) afternoon in the Dorigao Dakshinpara area of Nilakshya Union in the Upazila.
During the clash, the attackers extensively vandalized the local BNP office. At that time, photos of the martyred President Ziaur Rahman and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia were torn down, thrown on the floor, and desecrated.
Details of the Incident: The deceased, Mamun Mia, was the son of Abdul Awal Mia of Dorigao area in Nilakshya and a supporter of the local Nazimuddin group. Local sources indicate that there has been a long-standing feud between the groups led by Nazim Uddin Member and Alal Munshi over establishing dominance in the area. Consequently, the two sides engaged in a clash on Monday.
Among the injured, the names of Belal (30), son of Abdur Rashid, and Abdul Awal (55), son of Mostu Mia, are known. The remaining injured are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the district.
Law Enforcement Action: Upon receiving the news, a team from the Army arrived at the scene around 3:30 PM and brought the situation under control. Probir Kumar Ghosh, Inspector (Investigation) of Raipura Police Station, stated that the fatality resulted from the long-standing dispute. Additional police have been deployed to the area to maintain a normal situation.
Recommendation for Army Camp Establishment: Meanwhile, the Upazila administration has taken strict measures to curb the rising violence in Raipura. Following the incident, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Masud Rana sent a letter to the Principal Staff Officer of Dhaka Cantonment, requesting the recovery of illegal firearms from the char areas and the establishment of an Army camp before the upcoming 13th National Parliament Election.
The letter mentioned that 12 people have been murdered in this Upazila over the past year. Fatal clashes frequently occur in this locality, which comprises 24 unions and one municipality. The law and order situation is deteriorating because identified terrorists commit crimes and then take shelter in the char areas. Therefore, establishing an Army camp is essential to stop illegal sand extraction and maintain peace.
