DHAKA, BANGLADESH – November 21, 2025 – Panic spread across Dhaka University (DU) after a powerful 5.7 magnitude earthquake rattled the capital this morning. At least six students sustained injuries after they jumped from upper floors of their residential halls in fear.

The tremor, which struck at 10:38 a.m. local time, sent students rushing out of several old buildings. Witnesses reported students leaping from three- and four-storey structures at Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall and Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall. One student reportedly broke a leg. Campus security personnel immediately took the injured to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The earthquake also exposed long-standing safety fears on campus. The strong shaking caused plaster to fall and visible cracks to appear in multiple residential halls, including Mohsin Hall, Kabi Jasimuddin Hall, and Sir A F Rahman Hall.

Students have repeatedly raised alarms about the fragile condition of the decades-old dormitories. An injured student demanded that the university administration address the long-term neglect and ensure safe housing.

The incident highlights the dangers of panic and the urgent need for a review of emergency evacuation protocols across the university’s residential facilities.
