A man named Fakhrul Islam Manju (25) was beaten to death in Begumganj Upazila of Noakhali on charges of snatching (robbery/mugging) after local residents were summoned via the mosque’s microphone.
The incident occurred on Monday (December 12) morning in Ward No. 1 of Hajipur Union in the Upazila.
The deceased, Fakhrul Islam Manju, was the son of Rohan Mia, from the Paur Hajipur area of Ward No. 9 of Chaumuhani Municipality. Police stated that he had more than five cases filed against him at Begumganj and various other police stations, including charges of extortion, snatching, and illegal possession of arms.
Local sources indicate that at 9 AM on Monday, Manju allegedly forced a businessman out of a CNG autorickshaw in front of Mandar Bari in the Dakshin Hajipur area and snatched 20 lakh 50 thousand Taka. When the incident became known, local residents were called via the mosque’s microphone, they surrounded him, and beat him, resulting in his death on the spot.
According to information from the police and locals, the deceased Manju was an identified criminal in the area and was known as a top listed terrorist.
M R Bari, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Begumganj Model Police Station, said the body has been recovered and sent to the morgue of Noakhali General Hospital for post-mortem examination. He confirmed that the deceased Manju had more than five cases registered against him at the police station. Multiple teams from the police and the army visited the scene after receiving the news. An investigation is underway to uncover who killed him and for what reasons.
