In the devastating fire that burned hundreds of homes to ashes in Dhaka’s Karail Slum, one mosque was miraculously saved from the flames. While the raging fire destroyed everything around it, the ‘Baitul Ma’mur Jame Mosque’ in the slum stands intact.

The fire originated around 5:30 PM on Tuesday (November 25) in the Boubazar area of the Karail Slum in Banani. Due to high winds, the fire spread rapidly and was finally brought completely under control on Wednesday (November 26) morning, after burning for approximately 16 hours.
Local residents stated that the fire was so intense that nothing—houses, shops, or furniture—could be saved. Even though the heat melted iron structures, the main structure of the mosque remained undamaged by the boundless mercy of Almighty Allah. However, eyewitnesses reported that some tin structures on the roof of the mosque were burned.
Both local residents and rescue workers expressed astonishment at seeing the mosque standing unharmed amidst the ruins. Many are viewing the survival of the mosque amid the cries of the destitute slum dwellers as a ‘miraculous’ event.
According to Fire Service officials, 19 of their units had to work for a long time to bring the blaze under control. The narrow pathways and a shortage of water made firefighting extremely challenging. It is estimated that around 1,500 families have been affected by the fire. Thousands of people are currently enduring a subhuman existence under the open sky.
