Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury Sworn In as 26th Chief Justice of Bangladesh

Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury has taken the oath of office as the 26th Chief Justice of Bangladesh. President Md. Sahabuddin administered the oath at Bangabhaban on Sunday (December 28) at 10:36 AM. The ceremony was attended by the Chief Adviser of the Interim Government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, and the outgoing 25th Chief Justice, Syed Refat Ahmed.

Earlier, on December 23, the President appointed Appellate Division Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury to the position. According to the official notification signed by Law Ministry Secretary Liaquat Ali Molla, the appointment was made under the powers granted by Article 95(1) of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury was born on May 18, 1961. His father, the late AFM Abdur Rahman Chowdhury, was also a Justice of the Supreme Court. Justice Zubayer obtained his LLB (Honors) and LLM from Dhaka University before completing a second Master’s in International Law in the United Kingdom.

He enrolled as a lawyer in the District Court in 1985 and the High Court Division in 1987. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court on August 27, 2003, and was confirmed as a permanent judge two years later. On August 12, 2024, he was elevated to the Appellate Division and took his oath the following day.
