Online Desk : The BNP Standing Committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, held a meeting on Saturday night as preparations continue for the upcoming presidential election.
The meeting began at 8:00 pm at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka, with Prime Minister and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman presiding, according to Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony.
Those attending the meeting included BNP Standing Committee members Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Iqbal Hassan Mahmood, Selima Rahman and AZM Zahid Hossain.
Party sources said the committee was expected to discuss the nomination of the BNP’s candidate for the presidential election along with several organisational matters.
The presidential election became necessary after Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from the office on July 24. Following his resignation, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assumed the responsibilities of Acting President.
Under Article 123(2) of the Constitution, an election to fill a vacancy in the office of the President must be held within 90 days of the position becoming vacant due to resignation.
The Constitution provides that the President is elected by members of Parliament for a five-year term. A presidential candidate must be at least 35 years old, be qualified for election as a Member of Parliament and must not have been removed from the office of President through impeachment under the Constitution.
