The National Citizen Party (NCP) has once again suspended its central committee Joint Member Secretary Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir after he made objectionable remarks about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in a social media post.
Tanvir was temporarily suspended from his organisational position and served with a show-cause notice on Friday night, only hours after his controversial Facebook post triggered widespread criticism.
According to the notice, he has been instructed to submit a written explanation, supported by relevant evidence, to the party’s central disciplinary committee within two working days of receiving the letter, explaining why further organisational action should not be taken against him.
The Facebook post referred to attacks on and obstruction of NCP marches in three districts of Sylhet division, including Habiganj. In the post, Tanvir accused leaders of Chhatradal and Jubo Dal of involvement.
He also made objectionable remarks about the prime minister in the same post. Although he deleted the post a few hours later following criticism on Facebook, screenshots continued to circulate widely on social media.
In a letter published on the NCP’s verified Facebook page on Friday night, the party said a comment attributed to Tanvir amounted to “a serious organisational breach of discipline and damaging the party’s image on social media.”
The letter further stated that, considering the seriousness of the matter, Tanvir had been immediately relieved of his organisational responsibilities on the instructions of NCP Convener Nahid Islam and Member Secretary Akhter Hossen.
This is the second time Tanvir has been suspended by the party. He was first suspended in April 2025 following allegations that he interfered in deputy commissioner appointments after entering the Secretariat in the aftermath of the July mass uprising. He also faced allegations of involvement in commission dealings related to textbook printing contracts with the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB).
Tanvir remained outside the party for about a year before being reinstated on April 16 this year. His latest suspension comes around three and a half months after his return.
Soon after the controversy, Tanvir posted a message on his personal Facebook account expressing regret over his remarks.
