This problem can be caused by multiple factors.
Disc Prolapse or Herniation: This is the primary cause, where the disc between the vertebrae swells or ruptures, putting pressure on the nerve.
Bone Spurs (Osteophytes): As people age, sharp bony outgrowths (bone spurs) on the vertebrae can press on the nerves.
Injury-Related Changes: Trauma to the neck.
Poor Posture: Prolonged poor posture, such as looking down at a mobile phone or sitting continuously at a desk, also contributes to the problem.
One of the main symptoms is pain radiating from the neck, through the shoulder, into the arm and fingers.
Common signs include:
Tingling or Numbness (“pins and needles” sensation).
Weakness in the hand or arm.
Increased pain when moving the neck.
The grip strength of the hand may sometimes become weak.
Complete bed rest is not usually required for treating Cervical Radiculopathy, but patients should avoid overexertion and heavy lifting.
Heat or Cold: Applying a hot pack or cold compress can provide primary relief.
Temporary Collar: A cervical collar may be used temporarily if the pain is severe.
Modern treatment methods are effective in reducing pain:
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation).
IFT (Interferential Therapy).
Therapeutic Ultrasound: This helps reduce inflammation and muscle spasms.
Under a doctor’s advice, painkillers and muscle relaxants may be prescribed. Once the pain is somewhat controlled, doctors recommend range-of-motion exercises to restore normal neck movement and isometric neck exercises to strengthen the muscles.
Simple lifestyle adjustments can significantly help prevent Cervical Radiculopathy:
Phone/Tablet Use: Hold your mobile phone or tablet at eye level instead of lowering your head.
Computer Setup: Keep your computer monitor at eye level and adjust your chair height correctly.
Sleeping Posture: Avoid high pillows; use a medium-height, firm pillow.
Heavy Lifting (Head): Avoid carrying heavy items on your head.
Heavy Lifting (Hands): When lifting heavy items, divide the weight between both hands instead of carrying it all with one hand.
Breaks: Take a short break every half hour from work to stand up and walk around.
Driving: Use a small cushion for your neck during long drives.
