Winter Health Crisis: Child Pneumonia and Flu Cases Surge in Dhaka

With the onset of winter, hospitals across Dhaka are witnessing a sharp rise in children suffering from cold-related illnesses. Dry weather, worsening air pollution, and dust have led to a surge in respiratory infections, pneumonia, and diarrhea.

At the Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute, pneumonia wards are currently at full capacity. Data shows that between December 18 and 22, 261 children were treated for pneumonia, while over 1,200 sought outpatient care in a single day (December 23). Common ailments include fever, asthma, scabies, and viral diarrhea.

Cases like 3-month-old Supta, who required ICU support for recurring pneumonia, and newborn Anaf, treated for diarrhea just days after birth, highlight the severity of the situation.

Expert Advice: Professor Dr. Probir Kumar Sarkar, Head of Pulmonology, urges parents to:

Keep newborns warm and avoid unnecessary baths for premature infants.

Avoid outdoor food and packaged juices.

Ensure children wear masks to protect against dust.

Avoid self-medicating with antibiotics, as most winter illnesses are viral.

Experts warn that pneumonia remains a global threat, claiming a child’s life every 43 seconds. Early consultation with a doctor is vital if a child shows signs of breathing difficulty or persistent fever.
