The brutal, targeted assassination of Golam Kibria (47), the Member Secretary of the Pallabi Thana unit of the Jubo Dal (BNP’s youth wing), on Monday evening has intensified fears of political instability in Dhaka. The murder comes directly in the wake of the high-profile death sentence verdict for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Kibria was executed in a brazen daylight attack inside a hardware store in Mirpur, Pallabi, highlighting a serious breakdown in the law-and-order situation.

The homicide occurred around 6:40 PM when three masked men, reportedly arriving on a motorcycle, swiftly entered the shop where Kibria was located. The sequence of the attack, partially captured on CCTV, was chillingly efficient: the assailants fired multiple shots at close range, hitting Kibria in the head, chest, and back. This professional hit lasted less than ten seconds, and Kibria was pronounced dead shortly after. Adding to the public terror, the fleeing suspects shot an auto-rickshaw driver in the hip when he could not drive fast enough, before abandoning the rickshaw and continuing their escape on foot.

Law enforcement has managed to detain one suspected assailant, and interrogation is underway. However, the tense political environment immediately overshadows any other potential motive. The Pallabi Police Station OC confirmed the arrest and stated that authorities are investigating whether the Kibria murder stems from intra-party rivalry or a more direct political attack. In contrast, leaders from the BNP and its affiliates are forcefully labeling the incident a political assassination, suggesting it is an act of calculated terror by elements seeking to destabilize the interim government and intimidate the opposition.

The highly visible and violent nature of the Jubo Dal leader’s murder is likely to fuel political tensions. The murder’s timing—occurring just hours after the International Crimes Tribunal delivered the death sentence to the banned Awami League chief, Sheikh Hasina—is critical. Political analysts fear such violence could be aimed at creating the “anarchy” the anti-fascist parties warned against. The police have subsequently intensified patrols in the Mirpur-Pallabi area as the investigation into this critical political murder continues.
