Legal Steps Underway in Dubai to Re-Arrest Ex-IGP Benazir : Home Minister

Online Desk: The government has appointed a law firm in Dubai to challenge the conditional bail granted to former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed by a court in the United Arab Emirates, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters after a views-exchange meeting with officials and members of Rajshahi Range Police and Rajshahi Metropolitan Police at the Rajshahi Police Lines, the minister said the government is also trying to obtain a certified copy of the bail order.

“We are trying to obtain a certified copy of the bail order. The Bangladesh government has appointed a law firm in Dubai to challenge the bail order,” he said.

Salahuddin said the government had learned that Benazir Ahmed had been granted conditional bail by a Dubai court and that Bangladesh’s ambassador to the UAE had already been contacted regarding the matter.

Expressing optimism, the home minister said the government hopes to bring the former police chief back to Bangladesh through the legal process.

Senior police officials, including the Deputy Inspector General of Rajshahi Range and the Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, were present at the meeting.

Former IGP Benazir Ahmed was arrested in Dubai by the United Arab Emirates police in connection with a case filed by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

On June 14, Salahuddin Ahmed informed Parliament about the arrest, saying the UAE authorities had officially notified the Bangladesh government of the development on June 12.

Earlier, in April 2025, Interpol issued a Red Notice against the former police chief.
