Chief Advisor: Upcoming Election is an Opportunity to Build a New Bangladesh
Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the Interim Government, stated that the upcoming national election must be made memorable by organizing it beautifully and fairly. He referred to the election, following the mass uprising, as an opportunity to build a new Bangladesh.
The Chief Advisor made these remarks while giving directions on election preparations via video conference to Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) across the country. All Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Divisional Commissioners, and officials from the Cabinet Division were connected online during the conference.
Addressing the UNOs, the Chief Advisor said, “History has given us a new opportunity. Other generations will not get this chance. If we can utilize this opportunity, we can build a new Bangladesh; if we fail, the nation will stumble.”
The Chief Advisor mentioned, “We have seen elections before. Any sensible person would say that the elections held in the past were not elections, but fraud.”
He stressed that the upcoming election is not just another responsibility, but a historical responsibility. “If we can successfully carry out this duty, the day of the next election will be historical for the people as well,” he added.
Addressing the UNOs, the Chief Advisor stated, “If you perform your duties correctly, the government will be able to perform its duties successfully.”
Highlighting that both the upcoming election and the referendum are crucial for the nation, he said, “The election is for the next five years, and the referendum is for a hundred years.” Regarding the referendum, he stated, “Through this, we can permanently change Bangladesh. We can lay the foundation for the new Bangladesh we want to create.”
The Chief Advisor advised the newly appointed UNOs that their primary duty is to organize a peaceful and joyful election. He urged the UNOs to prepare for a beautiful election by visiting all polling stations in their respective areas and consulting with all concerned parties, local residents, and colleagues.
Emphasizing the importance of raising voter awareness about the referendum, he said, “Voters must be made to understand that they need to come with a fixed mind—whether they will vote ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.”
Comparing the officials to midwives (dhatri), the Chief Advisor said a good midwife results in a healthy baby. He instructed the officials to be creative in handling any situation and to take measures to prevent misinformation and rumors.
Highlighting the importance of prioritizing women’s participation in the election, he said it must be ensured that women can safely and properly come to the polling centers.
Mentioning that the election schedule will be announced soon, Chief Advisor Professor Yunus instructed the UNOs, “Start planning and preparing now for when, how, and what task you will perform until the election is complete.”
Senior officials, including the Chief Advisor’s Principal Secretary M. Siraj Uddin Miah, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rashid, Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Mohammad Shafiqul Alam, and Public Administration Secretary Md. Ehsanul Hoque, were present at the event.
