RANGPUR BUREAU: ABU RAYHAN – Sharmin S. Murshid, Advisor to the Ministries of Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs, stated that political parties hold the biggest responsibility for ensuring a peaceful election.

She commented, “The government has declared readiness to hold the election, and the Election Commission has also announced its preparations—now the responsibility rests with the political parties. Creating a peaceful environment is their most important duty.”
She made these remarks while responding to journalists’ questions after attending a program titled, “Government in the Ranks of the People, for the Protection of Women and Children,” held at the Rangpur Medical College Auditorium on Tuesday afternoon (November 25).
Democratic Conduct is Key
Sharmin S. Murshid reiterated that the government and the Election Commission are prepared for the election. She added that the media will point out any flaws. However, the primary responsibility for organizing a beautiful election lies with the political parties. The electoral environment depends entirely on their democratic behavior, tolerance, and responsibility.
She expressed hope that the parties would create an environment that minimizes the need for the state machinery to intervene heavily to maintain order.
Government Plans and Debates
Regarding the controversy over the transfer of government officials, she said that debates arise concerning every national issue. Yet, she confirmed that the government is moving forward with clear plans and not allowing itself to be stalled by such debates.
She respectfully remembered the victims of the July uprising, including Shaheed Abu Sayeed, along with all the July fighters and the general populace.
Women and Children’s Security
Addressing the safety of women and children, she noted, “Abuse is increasing in every neighborhood—to suppress and eliminate this, we must build a ‘Neighborhood Watch system.’ Both the state machinery and society must work together.”
She announced that a “Quick Response Strategy” has been adopted to ensure swift assistance in cases of violence against women and children. Under this strategy, mechanisms are being put in place to reach the victim within 24 hours.
Also present at the event were Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Md. Enamul Ahsan, departmental officials from the Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Ministries, and the parents of Tahid Zaman Priyo (a journalist killed during the July movement) and local July movement activists from Rangpur.
