The Global Sumud Flotilla, sailing toward Gaza to break Israel’s blockade, was attacked near Greece on the night of September 24. Crew members reported multiple drone sightings and over a dozen explosions, which caused damage to some vessels. José Nivoi, a dockworker aboard one of the boats, described being awakened by a strong explosion and seeing explosive devices launched into the water, suggesting an attempt to cause psychological pressure rather than full-scale attacks.

The coalition behind the mission denied Israel’s claims that the flotilla is linked to Hamas or plans violent actions. They emphasized the mission’s peaceful goal: to deliver essential supplies to Gaza’s population suffering under blockade and conflict. The flotilla highlighted that attacking humanitarian missions violates Geneva Conventions and constitutes war crimes.
Dr. James Smith, a doctor recently returned from the flotilla, said its mission also aims to keep global focus on Gaza and the extensive war crimes committed. Conservative estimates cite over 65,000 deaths in Gaza, including many health workers and journalists.
Israeli authorities have pressured the flotilla to dock at Ashkelon and transfer goods from there, but the coalition refused, citing Israel’s long history of obstructing aid to Gaza despite international court orders. They argue only safe passage under international protection ensures aid delivery.
European governments, whose citizens are on board, have mostly stayed silent, while activists responded quickly. The Italian union USB, which recently organized a general strike in solidarity with Palestine and the flotilla, called for widespread mobilization. USB condemned the attacks as part of a tactic of attrition and urged ongoing protests to support the flotilla and demand freedom for Palestine.
