Journalists Call for Justice

Online Desk : Leaders of several journalist organisations on Wednesday demanded justice for those responsible for the killings during the July Mass Uprising, along with rehabilitation of the injured and exemplary punishment for those found involved.

The demands were made at a rally and discussion organised by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the National Press Club, marking the second anniversary of the fall of the Awami League government and the victory of the student-people’s movement.

Earlier in the day, the journalist organisations brought out a victory procession from the National Press Club. The procession marched through several streets in the capital before returning to the Press Club premises.

Addressing the rally, BFUJ Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury called for a thorough investigation into the killings and alleged human rights violations committed during the movement, urging authorities to bring those responsible to justice without delay.

DUJ President Md Shahidul Islam said the sacrifices of students, citizens and journalists during the July-August uprising should be honoured by ensuring exemplary punishment for those responsible.

He said the journalist community expected the government to ensure swift and impartial justice against those accused of the killings and the alleged embezzlement of state funds.

The journalist leaders also stressed the need for greater unity among media professionals to safeguard democracy, freedom of expression and the rights of the people.

Among those present at the programme were Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Managing Director and Chief Editor Kamal Uddin Shabuj, Principal Information Officer of the Press Information Department Syed Abdal Ahmed, National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz and Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust Managing Director Mohammad Abdul Basir.
