At least 10 people were injured after police charged baton, lobbed tear gas shells and charged sound to disperse engineering students, including of BUET, near Hotel Intercontinental when they attempted to move towards the Chief Adviser’s residence to press home their three-point demand.
The students around 1:30PM began their procession from Shahbagh and were intercepted near the InterContinental Hotel when they tried to break through a barricade. A chase and counter-chase took place between the two groups. At one stage, police lobbed tear gas shells and charged sound grenades and also charged baton, leaving several injured.
Later, the protesters took position in front of the hotel, but police used water cannon to free the road.
Zahidul Haque, a student of Buet, said, ”Our clear demand is that an executive order should be issued to implement the three points demand and the criminals in the diploma who threatened to kill engineer Roknuzzaman must be immediately arrested and brought under law.”
Earlier, at 11AM, the students began their protest by staging a sit-in at Shahbagh intersection. They started the Long March towards Jamuna at 1:40PM, blocking Shahbagh and surrounding roads, causing severe traffic congestion.
