Rezaul Haque , KISHOREGANJ : Bangabir Kader Siddique, president of the Krishak Sramik Janata League, has blamed Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s political history for its own downfall.
Speaking to journalists after visiting the grave of Aminul Islam Tarek, president of the Kishoreganj district unit of the Krishak Sramik Janata League, on Thursday afternoon, Siddique alleged that Jamaat had sided with the British until the final phase of the anti-colonial movement and later opposed Bangladesh’s War of Independence in 1971 by supporting Pakistan.
“Jamaat-e-Islami is an unfortunate political party. Its own political history is the main reason for its downfall,” he said. “Bangladesh is rooted in the spirit of the Liberation War. History has judged those who stood against that spirit.”
Commenting on the country’s current political situation, Siddique also criticised former Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, alleging that he had caused significant damage to the country. However, he added that BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s gesture of showing respect to Dr Yunus on July Day reflected positive political decorum.
Referring to the activities of the current government, Siddique said the administration under Tarique Rahman’s leadership was facing both domestic and international challenges. Despite those difficulties, he claimed the present government was managing the country more effectively than during Professor Yunus’s tenure.
“There are national challenges, and the international challenges are even greater. Even so, the current government is handling the situation well,” he said.
Siddique also commented on the possibility of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returning to Bangladesh. He said that if she had announced a planned return, leaders and activists of the Awami League still in the country would have had an opportunity to reorganise. Instead, he argued, recent political programmes had exposed ordinary party workers to greater risks.
He further claimed that many individuals who were not involved in any wrongdoing or criminal activities were facing legal complications and imprisonment as a result of such political announcements, adding that the situation was not politically beneficial for the party.
