PM Pledges Support for Safe and Sustainable Water Management

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring safe and sustainable water management, assuring experts and stakeholders of full cooperation in addressing the country’s growing water-related challenges.

The assurance came during a meeting with experts and representatives from organisations working in the water, environment and engineering sectors at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Bangladesh Secretariat, according to Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu.

Discussions centred on key issues including canal restoration, river and embankment protection, improvements to urban drainage systems, wastewater treatment and rainwater management. Participants also underscored the importance of integrated urban planning to tackle the pressures of rapid urbanisation.

The meeting, led by Footsteps Bangladesh, brought together specialists from the environment, water and engineering sectors, along with representatives of several organisations engaged in water management and environmental protection.

The participants shared their experiences and proposed a range of measures to overcome existing challenges. They recommended implementing short-, medium- and long-term plans, increasing the use of modern technologies, improving coordination among relevant government agencies and adopting climate-resilient strategies to address the impacts of climate change.

After hearing their recommendations, the Prime Minister assured the participants that the government would extend its support to ensure effective and sustainable water management for citizens as part of its broader commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, Hasan Shiplu said.

Among those present at the meeting were State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar and BNP Special Secretary Belayet Hossain.

The meeting was attended by several experts and representatives, including Footsteps Bangladesh Trustee and Head of Partnerships Fasbeer Eskander, President Shah Rafayat Chowdhury, Vice-President Mohammad Taqi Yasir, former Chief Engineer of the World Bank’s Waste Management Project Tariq Bin Yousuf, United International University Professor Mujibur Rahman, Red Orange Director Alok Kumar Majumdar, Deputy Director Samiul Islam, Youth for NDC Executive Director Amanullah Parag, GarbageMan Founder and CEO Fahim Uddin Shuvo, and urban and rural planner SM Mehedi Hasan.
