At least three people were shot dead today in Guimara Upazila amid protests triggered by the rape of a schoolgirl in Khagrachhari.

Ahsan Habib Palash, Deputy Inspector General of Chattogram Range Police, confirmed that the victims’ bodies have been taken to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital.

The Ministry of Home Affairs expressed deep sorrow over the incident, reporting that the killings resulted from an attack by miscreants.

The clash also left thirteen army personnel, including a major, and three policemen, among them the officer-in-charge of Guimara Police Station, injured. The ministry assured a swift investigation and promised that those responsible would be brought to justice without exception. It urged everyone to remain calm and patient.

Khagrachhari Civil Surgeon Mohammed Saber confirmed that the three deceased were admitted to the hospital and will be sent for autopsy. Four injured individuals were also treated.

The situation remains tense as the Jumma Chhatra Janata-led indefinite road blockade entered its third day. Since morning, no local or long-haul vehicles have operated. Additional security forces have been deployed, and shops and businesses in the area remain closed.

Shapla Chattar, the town’s central square, was deserted in the morning, with security personnel scrutinizing the few passersby.

The case stems from a September 23 incident, when an eighth-grade student was assaulted while returning from private tuition around 9:00 pm.

The victim’s father filed a case the next day against three unidentified men at Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station. One suspect, Shoyon Shil, has since been arrested and placed on a six-day remand by the court.
