Independent Media Essential for Sustainable Democracy: Fakhrul

Online Desk : Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said an independent, responsible and vibrant media is indispensable for ensuring sustainable democracy in Bangladesh.

Addressing a seminar titled “Role of Media in Sustainable Democracy”, organised by the Television Editors Council at a hotel in the capital, Fakhrul said democracy can only flourish when the media operates freely and responsibly.
“A stronger media means a stronger democracy. But building a healthy democratic environment requires the collective efforts of the government, media owners, journalists and state institutions,” he said.
Describing democracy as more than an electoral process, the minister said it is a culture rooted in tolerance, respect for differing opinions and the effective functioning of democratic institutions.
He stressed that democracy cannot become sustainable unless key state institutions are strengthened.
Calling truth-telling the media’s foremost duty, Fakhrul urged journalists to remain committed to factual, objective and impartial reporting. He also emphasised the need to ensure journalists’ professional security, fair wages and an environment where they can work independently without fear.
“Strong institutions and a democratic culture are the foundations of sustainable democracy. When freedom of expression, tolerance and accountability are upheld, the media earns public trust and plays a greater role in strengthening democracy,” he added.
Presenting the keynote address, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon said the July Mass Uprising had created new opportunities for Bangladesh and that the media could help bridge the gap between the government and the people.
He also highlighted the importance of stronger coordination among the government, media owners and advertisers to enhance the media’s role in national development.
The seminar was chaired by Television Editors Council Convener Dr Abdul Hai Siddique.
Among those attending were Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr A. B. M. Obaidul Islam, Principal Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmed, National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, along with editors, senior journalists and representatives of various media organisations.
