Inside Dhaka Metro: The passengers we meet every day

Online Report 3 Oct 2025 , 5:54 AM Print Edition

Metro rail is the main commuting option for thousands of people in Dhaka.

Although most rides last only a few minutes, each journey offers a unique experience only the city can provide.

You can find different types of passengers on the metro:

The Gate Hugger:

This passenger stays standing right by the door throughout the trip, even if there is plenty of space inside.

This often blocks others from boarding or exiting easily.

The Entitled One:These passengers ignore queues and rush to enter first as soon as the train arrives, acting as if rules don’t apply to them, annoying everyone around.

The Apprehensive One: Nervous about missing their stop, they move towards the door far in advance and sometimes push others trying to get ready to exit early.

The Talkative One: Always eager to share their opinions loud and clear, these passengers keep the compartment noisy even if most prefer quiet.

The Group of Friends: Occasionally, young groups board the metro, excitedly chatting and laughing, which can disturb other tired office commuters.

Lastly, there’s the silent observer who watches, remembers, and one day writes about all these experiences. That’s me.
