Online Desk : Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Friday criticised India for allowing former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to address a press conference in New Delhi and expressed hope that the Indian government would revise its position and extradite her to Bangladesh.
In a statement, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said the party expected India to “change its stance and hand over convicted Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.”
He said Bangladesh remains committed to maintaining diplomatic relations with all countries, including neighbouring India, on the basis of equality, mutual respect and shared interests, while respecting the sovereignty and independence of other nations.
Parwar alleged that allowing Sheikh Hasina, whom he described as a convicted fugitive, to remain in India and engage in political activities despite repeated requests from Bangladesh amounted to a violation of diplomatic norms and international etiquette.
“We strongly condemn and protest such diplomatic conduct by the Indian government,” he said.
The Jamaat leader alleged that Sheikh Hasina’s government had carried out repression, enforced disappearances and killings during its time in office, including during the July 2024 mass uprising.
He claimed the interim government had repeatedly requested Hasina’s extradition, but India had continued to provide her shelter despite the bilateral extradition treaty.
Parwar further alleged that by refusing to extradite Hasina, India appeared to be supporting the activities of the banned Awami League rather than responding to Bangladesh’s requests.
He also criticised the current government for failing to bring Hasina back to the country by the second anniversary of the July mass uprising, saying the delay was allowing her to continue political activities from abroad.
Calling for stronger diplomatic efforts, Parwar urged the government to pursue Hasina’s return through all available legal and international channels, including seeking an Interpol Red Notice and assistance from the United Nations.
He warned that any diplomatic failure to secure her extradition would ultimately require accountability before the people, according to the statement.
