Online Desk : Libyan authorities have rescued 13 Bangladeshi migrants who were allegedly abducted and held for ransom in Tripoli, and arrested a Syrian national accused of carrying out the kidnapping, according to The Libya Observer.
Citing Libya’s Anti-Illegal Migration Agency (East Tripoli Branch), the report said the suspect has been referred to the Public Prosecution, which ordered his pretrial detention pending further investigation.
According to the agency, the operation began after its Investigation and Arrest Unit at the East Tripoli Migrant Detention Centre received information about a criminal network that was allegedly kidnapping newly arrived migrants and demanding ransom from their families in exchange for their release.
Investigators conducted preliminary inquiries, gathered intelligence and tracked the suspects before identifying the location where the migrants were being held.
After obtaining authorisation from the Public Prosecution, law enforcement officers raided the site, rescued the 13 Bangladeshi migrants and arrested the Syrian suspect.
The agency said the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation after being confronted with evidence collected during the investigation.
His statement was formally recorded before he was handed over to the Public Prosecution, which ordered his detention pending the completion of the investigation.
