BRASÍLIA, BRAZIL — Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was taken into preventive custody by Federal Police on Saturday, November 22. The dramatic arrest comes just days before he was scheduled to begin serving a 27-year prison sentence.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the preemptive arrest. The judge ruled that Bolsonaro posed an “extremely serious” flight risk. Bolsonaro, who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022, had been under house arrest since August.
Coup Conviction and Flight Risk
The arrest is a major escalation in the former leader’s legal saga.
Conviction: Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison in September 2025. He was convicted of leading an attempted coup d’état to overturn the 2022 election results and prevent the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Reason for Detention: Justice de Moraes claimed Bolsonaro had violated the terms of his electronic ankle monitor shortly after midnight on Saturday. The ruling stated that this breach and a planned vigil organized by his son outside his residence indicated an intent to “ensure the success of his escape.”
Police Custody: The 70-year-old former army captain was moved from his home in Brasília to the Federal Police headquarters.
Bolsonaro’s attorneys quickly denied the allegations. They argued that the decision, which they called “baffling,” was based merely on a prayer vigil called by his son, Flávio Bolsonaro. They have vowed to appeal the detention.
Political Fallout
Bolsonaro’s supporters and opponents have reacted strongly. Detractors are celebrating the move as a victory for democracy. Conversely, his allies denounced the arrest as an act of “political persecution.” The Supreme Court’s panel is expected to vote on the arrest order in an extraordinary session on Monday. This development marks a significant moment in the long legal battle against the polarizing far-right leader.
