Shakib Al Hasan era ends for Bangladesh cricket

Online Report 30 Sep 2025 , 5:50 AM Print Edition

Despite no official retirement announcement, Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan has confirmed that Shakib Al Hasan will no longer represent Bangladesh in cricket.

This decision came after a social media dispute triggered by Shakib’s birthday greeting to the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Following the incident, disagreement escalated on Facebook with indirect posts from both sides.

Asif declared that he would instruct the Bangladesh Cricket Board not to allow Shakib to play for the national team again.

He stated that Shakib, who is also a Member of Parliament for Magura, cannot carry the country’s flag due to his political associations and ongoing legal issues.

Shakib has faced allegations including murder, stock market fraud, and charges by the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Asif emphasized that being a talented cricketer is not enough to overlook these legal and political complications.

He reinforced that everyone is equal before the law and that Shakib’s return to the national team is out of the question.

Shakib has been abroad since political unrest last year, and this announcement signals the likely end of his cricketing chapter for Bangladesh.
