BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir praised Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus for reflecting the vision of late President Ziaur Rahman—a democratic, developed, and corruption-free Bangladesh.
Speaking at NRB Connect Day in New York, Fakhrul said Yunus’s recent speech reminded him of Zia’s enduring dream and emphasized the need to carry forward those visions with political commitment and determination.
Fakhrul acknowledged the vital contributions of overseas Bangladeshis and women in the garment sector for national development. He highlighted Ziaur Rahman’s role in opening overseas labour markets to the Middle East and advancing the garment industry, which empowered many women and transformed Bangladesh’s economy.
The BNP leader also recalled Zia’s efforts to establish multi-party democracy and ensure freedom of speech, press, and information. He mentioned Tarique Rahman’s 31-point programme as a fresh vision for the country’s development.
Fakhrul urged the younger generation to take the lead in building a new prosperous Bangladesh, following the older generation’s struggles in the Liberation War and democratic movements. He criticized the previous regime for destroying public trust and leaving the country in ruin.
Highlighting Bangladeshis’ unity and resilience, Fakhrul praised their resistance during crises, including recent struggles. He affirmed BNP’s commitment to cooperating with the National Consensus Commission to promote structural change.
Expressing optimism, Fakhrul called for unity under the motto “Bangladesh first and Bangladesh above all,” encouraging collective efforts for the nation’s future, with a special hope for the active role of young girls in shaping the country.
