Voting is currently underway for the Gono Bishwabidyalay (GB) Central Students’ Union (Gucsu) elections in Ashulia, Savar. The polls opened at 9 a.m. on Thursday and will continue until 3 p.m., with balloting taking place at 19 booths across 19 centers for both male and female students. The results will be declared later in the day, after the votes are counted.
Rizwana Afrin Richi from the 33rd batch of the Law Department shared her excitement, saying, “Today is our first vote in the Gucsu election 2025. Everything is going smoothly, and we hope the elected representatives will keep their promises and work for us.”
Mahi Jahan Ronok of the 38th batch in the CSE Department highlighted the importance of the elections, stating, “This is the first central students’ union election in eight years at Gono Bishwabidyalay, which is a joyous occasion. We have many demands, including improvements in the canteen and boundary wall.”
Md Rafiqul Alam, Gucsu Election Commissioner and GB faculty member, noted that voter turnout may fluctuate due to the upcoming Puja holidays, but assured that voting will accommodate all students. He emphasized that the election is being conducted fairly without any political influence and that any violations are being addressed promptly. Counting and results announcement will take place within three to four hours after voting ends.
Vice-Chancellor Md Abul Hossain expressed satisfaction with the smooth and orderly voting process, noting that independent authorities oversee the polls and that this election fulfills a long-standing student demand. He hopes the election will be a regular event, fostering future student leadership. Security has been tightened with 400 personnel deployed, including CCTV surveillance, the army, and Quick Response Team involvement.
Dhaka District Police Additional Superintendent Arafatul Islam confirmed law enforcement presence, ensuring security and smooth conduct. Around 400 officers, both uniformed and plainclothes, are deployed with detectives to maintain order.
After nearly seven years, the Gucsu election includes both the central and faculty councils. Sixty-six candidates compete for 21 positions, with 4,761 eligible voters. Positions include various secretary and executive member roles across faculties such as Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences, Arts, Science and Engineering, and Health.
The election marks a significant return of student democracy at Gono Bishwabidyalay, with hopes of fostering responsible student leadership in the future.
